January 13, 2017 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We have begun our unit on sea life in preparation for our trip to the New England Aquarium on Tuesday, January 31st.  Please don’t forget to send in the $12 to cover the cost of the trip (for students and chaperones).  Checks should be made payable to Francis Wyman Kindergarten.  We have three chaperones joining us for the trip.  Thanks in advance to Mrs. Murphy, Mr. Carlson, and Mr. Trowbridge for your willingness to come! Anyone else who was interested in chaperoning, I have put you on a waiting list in case someone else can't make it.

The children made their own aquarium scenes and sea turtles, which look amazing hanging on our back wall. I will post a picture next week after all the sea turtles have been completed.  The children are also working on an innovation of Eric Carle's, A House for Hermit Crab.  We have been learning more about fascinating sea turtles and will learn about octopuses too!

The students continue to write in their journals and practice writing the lowercase letters. We will be learning the uppercase letters very soon.  Although the children are more familiar and comfortable with these, we are spending quite a bit of time making sure they are forming the letters correctly. We encourage the children to use more lowercase letters in their names.  We just started learning how to “tap out” words to read.  The students are doing very well with this!

We have also been working more with syllables this week and have started doing more with sight words.  The list of sight words went home before vacation in the reading packet I sent home.  Please be sure to practice these words with your child often so they become more familiar.  A memory game may work well  (only use 10-15 words at a time) and be sure to look for these words on signs, around the house, in books, etc.  The more students read and write these words, the more automatic they will become!  Students should also be practicing the addition fluency facts that came home this week as well.

We will be having our Fish Day on Friday, January 27th.  Students will travel around to different Kindergarten classrooms to complete various fish projects.  Volunteers who have spoken to me about helping out that day, the time is from 9:00-10:15am.  Please check in at the office first.

I hope you have a great long weekend!  No school on Monday!

Melanie Duncan

PS...We are extending the Scholastic Book Order deadline to Tuesday, January 17th.
